DOORS = DOYOUNG (DO) + US (ORS)

Singapore Czennies‘ (NCTzens) ears were blessed last week, 16 July 2025, when DOYOUNG held his first solo concert in Singapore at The Star Theatre. The 2-hour-long concert transported fans to different locations, such as a jazz bar and a wide field with a tricycle.

The show began with Wake from the Dark where the screen lifted to reveal DOYOUNG in white, framed by glowing doors and angel wings (p.s. he really looked like an angel). The vocals were intense right off the bat, and the crowd roared. A live band backed the full set, with each stage design reflecting the song’s mood. Singing more than 10 songs, DOYOUNG’s vocals were heavenly, hitting high notes after high notes. Fans singing along added a touch to the performance.

The animations onscreen were another scene stealer, even though DOYOUNG was the main show. Dallas Love Field featured a plane door that DOYOUNG cutely pushed open. From Little Wave had a dreamy backdrop of clouds and sea, and after fans sang with him, he responded with a playful “Steady la!” Slower songs like Sand Box and Time Machine showcased his softer side. For two mid-show ballads, he performed seated, his voice airy and emotional.

Throughout the night, DOYOUNG engaged the audience with casual banter and Singlish he’d picked up during the soundcheck, like I’m so happy shi-ya(sia)”, “chio”, “can or not”, and more. His pronunciation of “chio” caused a funny moment as he at first guessed “jiao?” “chiu?” before finally nailing it.

Following a slick, jazzy VCR, the theatre underwent a dazzling transformation. Bathed in warm amber lighting, the space shifted into an intimate Jazz Bar straight out of the 1960s. The atmosphere was electric yet refined, setting the stage perfectly for what came next. Enter DOYOUNG, effortlessly stylish in a red satin shirt, exuding charisma as he stepped up alongside his live band. He launched into a smooth rendition of YESTODAY (by NCT U), his vocals gliding seamlessly over the lush instrumentation. The mood deepened with Like a Star, highlighted by a delicate piano solo that left the audience in rapt silence, soaking in every note.

Between songs, DOYOUNG showcased his personable charm, introducing each band member with genuine warmth before joining his pianist for a tasteful duet that perfectly captured the lounge vibe. In true showman fashion, he couldn’t resist teasing the crowd when he noticed a few hesitant singers: “Some of you just followed your friend here, right? Is it too expensive to admit it?” he joked. The roar of laughter and the emphatic “NO!” that followed only added to the night’s infectious energy.

For his local cover, he charmed fans with The Cutest Pair by Regina Song. Not quite satisfied with his first attempt, he playfully asked for a redo, determined to give the audience his best. The now-viral videos online come from this second take, which he personally encouraged fans to share. Adding to the fun, he showed off his cheeky side when he caught the interpreter copying his tone, prompting him to switch it up and leave everyone laughing.

Before the next song, he casually buttoned up his shirt and teased, “Calm down, calm down”—which, of course, only sent the crowd into even louder screams. He closed with Memory before returning for an encore with Eternity and Rest. “This was the most fun I’ve had so far. Really, no lie.” he confessed, and judging by the deafening cheers, fans couldn’t have agreed more.

The night ended on a magical note as bunny-shaped confetti rained down. Ever the playful performer, he scooped up a handful and tossed it into the stalls, delighting fans even more. When he read the slogan message “As you keep soaring higher, we will keep chasing after your light”, he turned it around, gifting fans the quote of the night: “Everyone, please soar higher than me. I’ll chase after you”. (Awww!)
